EXPERIENCE

Unlike many attorneys, I did not decide to go to law school right after college. Instead, I accepted a position with the Boy Scouts of America as a District Executive and then a job with an independent insurance adjusting company located in Minnesota.

When my wife started graduate school in Ohio, I took a position as a social worker working with teens referred through the juvenile court system. Following her graduation, we moved to Minnesota, and I began law school at the University of Minnesota as a “non-traditional (a.k.a. older) student.”

My legal career started in law school and continues today.  The following is an abbreviated summary of my legal career:

  • While attending law school, I worked 15-20 hours per week at a major auto insurance company.
  • After law school, I took a job in the litigation department of a law firm in St. Cloud, Minnesota.  The job provided me with great on-hands experience. Under the guidance of experienced attorneys, I handled a variety of cases.
  • After 4-5 years, I took a position with the same insurance company that I worked for during law school. I worked for that company in Minnesota for 8+ years.  My wife was then offered a teaching position in Lodi, Wisconsin, and the insurance company transferred me to their Madison office.
  • After several more years in the insurance company's Madison/Sun Prairie office, I left to pursue my dream of opening my own law office, Mayer Law Office, in Lodi, WI.  The firm is a general practice law firm focusing on civil (a.k.a. non-criminal) law matters.

In all, my work experience in the legal profession spans over 30 years. The years I spent with the insurance company focused on evaluating, negotiating, settling, and, if needed, litigating bodily injury claims. After opening my own law firm, I continue to handle personal injury claims, but now on behalf of the injured. Also, I work with clients on their real estate issues and estate planning, and I also work with personal representatives/executors on probate files.
